An op-ed published in The Washington Post Sunday charges that President Joe Biden’s pro-abortion messaging is a sign of “desperation.”
“It must be challenging for a Catholic president to make abortion the centerpiece of his reelection campaign,” wrote columnist Kathleen Parker in the op-ed. “I wonder whether Joe Biden has nightmares as he recruits abortion-denied women to serve as surrogates to make his case.”
Parker was likely referring to the president’s recent campaigning with women who traveled to other states to abort their babies, circumventing pro-life laws.
The columnist pointed out that Biden was “a proud pro-life Democrat” during his early political career in the 1970s and 80s. Biden has since “become a modern-day gladiator for abortion, even if he can’t bring himself to say the word,” Parker wrote.
Parker also noted Biden’s frequent use of euphemisms for abortion.
“During his State of the Union address in March, the president all but danced an Irish jig around the term [abortion], speaking instead of protecting reproductive freedom,” she wrote. “His discomfort was telling.”
Parker described Biden’s recent decision to make the Sign of the Cross at a Florida rally in support of abortion last month — a gesture which a chorus of Catholic observers immediately denounced as blasphemous:

It was a moment. Reactions ricocheted around social media, with some fellow Catholics seeing his gesture as sacrilegious.
What I saw was a Catholic pleading for forgiveness for delivering a message he secretly finds abhorrent.
Later on in her piece, Parker wrote
my guess is Biden realizes he has made a bargain with the wrong guy and must atone however he can — except, of course, by being true to his convictions and, at 82, sacrificing his (fourth) bid for the presidency in the service of his faith.
Biden can’t make his Catholicism part of his campaign, frequently telling people he always keeps a rosary in his pocket and then expect not to be critiqued when he betrays that faith.
“Biden’s surrogates will keep telling their stories as their usefulness wanes,” Parker added, again referring to women like Kate Cox who speak of being “denied” abortions due to red states’ pro-life laws.
“Biden will continue taking Communion in his little Delaware church, consuming the host despite the church’s policy against Communion for people who publicly promote abortion,” Parker emphasized.
Parker is widely considered to be a center-right columnist, but she has in the past been critical of the Republican Party and former President Donald Trump.
On her own website, Parker describes herself as “[n]either a movement conservative nor a liberal.”
