All the confusion about when life begins is unnecessary because the science is clear.
“Life begins at conception. That’s a scientific fact,” Dr. Russell Gombosi, an internal medicine specialist in Pennsylvania, told the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.
Speaking about the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Gombosi told the newspaper that babies in the womb are distinct individuals with their own DNA from the moment of conception.
“It’s not really [the mother’s] body. They are carrying something,” the doctor said. “While the baby is within their body, it is not really part of them. It is a separate entity.”
Gombosi, Treasurer of the American College of Pediatricians, said the debate about when life begins is legal and philosophical, not scientific.

Numerous medical and scientific textbooks, doctors, researchers and other experts confirm that a unique, living human being comes into existence at the moment of conception. A recent survey of more than 5,000 biologists at academic institutions across the world found that 96 percent agree that human life begins at the point of conception or fertilization.
Abortions intentionally kill these human beings – children – at a rate of nearly 1 million a year in the U.S. About 90 percent of those abortions are elective, Gombosi told the newspaper.
The doctor said he believes abortions should be allowed in the rare cases when the mother’s life is at risk, but, otherwise babies in the womb deserve to be protected.
“If there is a true situation where the mother’s life is threatened … yes,” he continued. “As far as rape, you’d like to see [mothers] get help immediately. I am not convinced that sacrificing a healthy fetus will solve the problem.”
Gombosi said he believes society must be more welcoming and supportive of pregnant mothers and babies. Better prenatal care and other support will help stop abortions and encourage more mothers to choose life, he said.
Abortion is the leading cause of death in America and across the world. But pro-life advocates in the U.S. have renewed hope that more babies will be saved from abortion after Roe was overturned this summer.
In the historic Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health ruling June 24, the Supreme Court justices overturned Roe and allowed states to protect unborn babies from abortion again. Thirteen already have done so, although some have been blocked by court orders, and more state are expected to enact pro-life laws in the coming weeks.
The Charlotte Lozier Institute estimates more than 110,000 unborn babies are being saved from abortion as a result of the pro-life laws currently in place.
